Design-Ops: For a Hassle-free Design

by Chen

Its 9 PM. After all the brainstorming and conceptualization for the past 2 days with the user research results, Jack is creating a new wire-frame for an e-commerce website. He has just finished designing all the wire-frames and he thought about to leave. Suddenly his phone rings, and ‘Yes’ you guessed it right, there is an immediate update in the feature list, so the wire-frame needs to be updated for the day after. Now, there is no-way Jack can deny and say ‘No’ to it. Jack should be back to work immediately.
I will stop here in Jack’s story. Because you see, now Jack is going to have a sleepless night.

Time to sit and ponder. Is this a daily life challenge for a designer?
Is this is what is expected of your job as a designer to do?
That means this blog is for you/your company/agency who necessarily needs to know about the vitality of Design-Ops.

Design-Ops is a process of Design and how it should work with designers. The Goal of the Design-Ops is to make sure that designers are working seamlessly without any problem in the process and definition of how it should be.

There are a lot of aspects in which Design-Ops works. Some of the key aspects are Workflow, Tools, Governance, Infrastructure, Budget, Headcount, Pipeline, Education and most importantly Evangelism.

To make your company process-centric something has to be there on the wall that everyone can read and act accordingly. This is for all the designers, manager and including the client. Design-Ops can operate all throughout the company or a process that is defined for a particular client. Every designer and design agencies growth is steep nowadays, thus everyone is running behind Design-Ops. Every design agency needs a Design-Ops Person (If your team is more than 50 headcount) or Design-Ops thinking (if you are in still in small-scale like 5 to 20). Design-Ops person should be a designer because they know what creates a design that works for the client.

Some of the work of the design-Ops person are like project intake, staffing and resource allocations, spreadsheets, logistics and all other things that the good designers should waste his time doing. Design-Ops will make your work hassle free and with consistent design outputs. It will increase the productivity of a designer so that the designer can purely concentrate on the design and its innovation.

Back to where we stopped. Yes, Jack’s company definitely needs Design-Ops so that designers like him can go home happy. If you are a designer spread the word and make yourself and your team smile.
